Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are exploding everywhere since last year. Collections and games with them are making a huge splash worldwide, and probably it’s time to go in as well. A lot of creative, fun, and likely profitable NFT collections and games are waiting for us in 2022.

At this point, we need to remember what is the Play-To-Earn model, because it’s very involved with the topic. Basically, in this type of game, the users earn rewards (usually in native tokens or NFTs) while playing and/or for achieving some goals inside the game. Like win a battle, or reach a new level. Of course, these rewards have real-world value. In the case of NFTs, they can be bought and sold like any other asset on a marketplace online.

Sometimes, those native tokens (for example, Axie Infinity/AXS) can appreciate over time and provide profits to their holders. Likewise, the NFTs bought to play or earned inside the game can go up in price quickly (like the most expensive axies).

For its part, the NFT collections without a game involved are a series of NFTs with similar characteristics, but which present unique qualities separately. For example, the famous CryptoPunks: all of them are small punks, but each one is different from the other. And they’re bought and sold like art.

With this in mind, let’s go over some interesting NFT collections and games to check this 2022. We didn’t include some very famous titles (i.e. Axie Infinity or CryptoPunks), because we’re aiming for less-known projects to discover.

Apes and more apes

Believe it or not, there are several NFT collections featuring apes and monkeys for 2022. And they’re very expensive sometimes. For example, the most popular of them is the collection “Bored Ape Yacht Club” by Yuga Labs, available on Ethereum. The name might not be random in this case. It’s considered that these apes come from “apeing” in crypto: when a trader buys some new asset impulsively, without investigation, due to the fear of missing out (FOMO).

Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) was launched in April 2021, and displays 10,000 figures of cartoon bored apes. Each ape is a unique NFT, but all of them combine 170 different traits, including fur, color, clothes, expression, and accessories. At first, every ape was sold for 0.08 ETH (around $200 at the time), but now it’s a very different story. The less expensive apes can cost over 20 ETH ($46,000+) on OpenSea.

Additionally, every owner can access exclusive online areas and events. Maybe that’s why household names like Eminem, Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, Steph Curry, and The Chainsmokers have their own bored (and expensive) apes.

More “affordable” apes are available on Solana. A popular collection is Solana Business Monkeys (SMB), which pictures 5,000 low-pixeled and unique images of randomly generated monkeys, with around 99 possible attributes. The prices per NFT start at 172 SOL in there ($14,700+). Also in Solana, we have Degenerate Ape Academy, which pictures 10,000 apes with plain “degenerate behavior” and 137 possible traits. The prices start at 50 SOL (around $4,300) per ape.

Meebits and glyphs

Perhaps Larva Labs rings you some bells? Well, they were the creators of the famous CryptoPunks. But that wasn’t the only NFT collection they did. In May 2021 they released “Meebits”. This is an NFT collection of 20,000 unique 3D voxel human, animal, robot, and skeleton characters, which can be rendered and animated. Suggested use for them is to be avatars in the upcoming metaverse (virtual world).

They might look similar to the CryptoPunks. However, not only the characters are different, but also the format and the movement differ. They’re full figures that can even dance if the owner wants it. At first, a Meebit could be acquired for 2.5 ETH (around $6,200), but, depending on the rarity, they’ve been sold for millions.

On the other hand, a less known but interesting project by Larva Labs is dubbed “Autoglyphs”. They’re described as “the first ‘on-chain’ generative art on the Ethereum blockchain”. This means that every artwork is created by an algorithm inside the smart contract itself, only with monochromatic lines. The 512 NFT Autoglyphs are available at OpenSea, with starting prices of around $442,000 in 2022.

DeFi Kingdoms

As the name suggests, this game includes a lot of Decentralized Finance (DeFi). Inside a medieval world full of heroes and lands, the users can swap tokens, make some liquidity mining in the pool and gardens, and stake for rewards in the “bank”. All of this could be barely metaphorical, but the heroes are NFTs that can go on different quests, parties, and battles.

The gamers can also acquire lands, buildings, and equipment. Especially this 2022. But the DeFi operations are done with its native token, JEWEL, based on the Harmony blockchain. The rewards are provided in this token as well. However, to start playing is necessary to have some Harmony ONE tokens (at around $0.17) inside a Metamask wallet.

As for the NFTs, the heroes can be bought, sold, and rented in The Tavern (inside the game) this 2022. They can also be summoned through The Portal by combining genes from current heroes —which is why they’re also rented in the Tavern. Currently, a common hero can be up to $500, and the users have to play with several of them. For its part, JEWEL has a price of $7 per unit and a market cap of over $458 million [CoinMarketCap].

Guild of Guardians

This game is in an early stage, so, it’s not playable yet. However, the presale of its native tokens, the gems (GOG), and NFT heroes raised over $10 million since June 2021. Back then, every NFT hero was sold from $10 to $200. Guild of Guardians, based on Ethereum, is a collaboration between the game developer company Stepico Games and the layer-two scaling solution Immutable. Its official release is planned for early 2022.

It’ll be a multiplayer game available for iOS and Android. The users have to create (or join) a group of guardians to collect resources and go into battles. Inspired by fantasy game classics Diablo and Dungeons and Dragons, the users will find several races, factions, and hero classes. All of this is in a classic RPG style, but with the possibility to earn rewards.

The native tokens of the game are publicly available since December 2021. They have a price of $0.89 per token and a market cap of over $40 million so far [CoinMarketCap].

Mines of Dalarnia

This game is still on its alpha version, waiting for a lot of advances this 2022. It was developed by Workinman Interactive and Chromia Studios on the Chromia blockchain. Therefore, in order to play, the users need to open a Chromia Vault through Metamask. Once inside the game, you can choose between being a miner or a landowner. The first ones can go in quests to find secrets, valuable resources, and rewards (like NFTs) inside the lands of different planets.

Meanwhile, the landowners can rent their lands, upgrade them, and collaborate with the miners for their maintenance. When the final version of the game goes out, the users will still have the opportunity to play for free, but with some in-game limitations. To access all the features and levels in 2022, it’ll be required to buy a Mining Passport NFT for around $20 each —and probably acquire some other in-game items, including NFTs.

Some NFT canaries that help the miners to find treasures are in sale already on the Binance NFT Marketplace —with prices starting at $1,170 in BNB and BUSD. Additionally, the developers also launched an NFT collection of 10,000 Mining Apes that assures some extra rewards for the owners. They’re available on OpenSea, with prices starting at 0.28 ETH ($645). The governance token of the game, DAR, it’s also available for trading at around $0.74.

So, it’s time to enjoy all these NFT games and collections for 2022! But don’t forget it: do your own research (DYOR) about them first.
