That\u2019s the short amount of time in which Tesla accepted Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment method. Recently, in an announcement that nobody expected, Elon Musk (Tesla CEO) declared that <strong>his company will stop accepting the first cryptocurrency due to environmental concerns.<\/strong> This would be because of the amount of energy consumed to secure the Bitcoin network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To strengthen his argument, Musk quoted the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption (<a href=\"https:\/\/cbeci.org\/cbeci\/comparisons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CBEI<\/a>). Besides, \u201cthe amount of electricity consumed every year by always-on but inactive home devices in the USA alone could power the Bitcoin network for 1.5 years\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk also stated (on Twitter) that <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/08\/25\/cryptocurrency-mining-dummies-how-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bitcoin mining<\/a> is promoting the use of fossil fuels. That\u2019s why Tesla is now rejecting the BTC payments and exploring other cryptocurrency options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tesla &amp; Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YSswJmVZhP\">pic.twitter.com\/YSswJmVZhP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392602041025843203?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the least, Tesla won\u2019t sell its previous investment <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/08\/20\/how-buy-bitcoin-simple-steps-nice-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Bitcoin<\/a>. Instead, they\u2019ll expect this blockchain to change into greener systems to make transactions with the currency. Despite that fact, <strong>the Bitcoin price quickly fell by over 13% just after the news<\/strong> [CoinMarketCap]. Luckily, it\u2019s already recovering. It\u2019s now back to the $50,000 support. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Tesla in the right about Bitcoin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All those environmental concerns about Bitcoin \u2014not only the ones by Tesla\u2014 could be unfounded. As Changpeng Zhao (Binance CEO), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1392657323965829123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">commented<\/a> on Twitter: \u201cElon probably did not research how much energy is required to run other (non-crypto) currencies that Tesla accepts.\u201d Just as an example: the banking industry <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptowords.github.io\/bitcoin-and-energy-consumption-rebuttal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">consumes<\/a> over 639 TWh annually \u2014against 148 TWh on Bitcoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, according to the firm <a href=\"https:\/\/coinshares.com\/assets\/resources\/Research\/bitcoin-mining-network-june-2019-fidelity-foreword.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CoinShares<\/a>, <strong>more than 74% of Bitcoin mining uses renewable energy sources<\/strong>, such as hydroelectric, solar, and geothermal. So, in that case, <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2021\/03\/22\/bitcoin-100k-300k-2021-according-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a> and cryptos wouldn\u2019t be contaminating. That\u2019s why the miners always look for cheaper sources of energy, and that usually means renewable energies. Carbon and fossil fuels are often too expensive to make profitable the crypto-mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/more-companies-accepting-bitcoin-cryptocurrency-paypal-starbucks-2021-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Some companies<\/a> seem to know this already. <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2021\/02\/22\/ripple-moneygram-stop-partnership-due-sec-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moneygram<\/a>, Yum Brands (Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC), and Cola-Cola are accepting crypto payments in several parts of the world. These ones, of course, apart from the more than 22,200 listed by CoinMap.
