Why crypto offline?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYes, why is it necessary at all? We have Internet, we have energy, so, offline transactions would barely be an extra feature, right? It could be more complicated than that. In the first place, not everyone in the world counts on energy and Internet. In 2021, around<\/a> 768 million people didn\u2019t have electricity, and over<\/a> 2.9 billion people had never used the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"Crypto-offline-people-Internet\"](\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/business-5475655_1920-1024x537.jpg\")
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nCrypto transactions offline could provide a huge opportunity for financial inclusion<\/a>, especially in difficult areas. More than that, common crypto users wouldn\u2019t need to worry about having a connection at all. It\u2019d be more practical than traditional bank transfers, even. They could send and receive coins (and send some messages too, as we\u2019ll see ahead) without energy or Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn the second place, we need to talk about decentralization<\/a> a bit. Cryptocurrencies were designed to be censorship-resistant, since, in theory, no one can control them. That\u2019s just the ideal, though. In reality, cryptocurrencies work on Internet, and, sadly, the Internet isn\u2019t censorship-resistant at all<\/strong>. This way, for example, a government couldn\u2019t block Bitcoin transactions directly, but they could block crypto exchanges or national Internet Service Providers (ISPs \u2014companies that provide connectivity). They can cut off the power too.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThat\u2019s why we still need to develop more independent infrastructure to carry on crypto transactions offline; without the need for our usual sources of energy<\/a> and connection. A higher decentralization and security would be reached. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nOffline proposals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWe can find some proposals on paper that might be interesting but still require a temporary Internet connection. One of them is \u201cPure Wallet\u201d, a software that uses new tokens for offline exchange. The idea<\/a> is to use an Internet connection briefly to transform cryptocurrencies into tokens that could be handled offline by the parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"Crypto-offline-tokens-bitcoin\"](\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cryptocurrency-6601591_1920-1024x576.jpg\")
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nOnce transformed, the parties could send and receive these tokens through Near Field Communication (NFC) between electronic devices. Finally, the receiver can redeem the tokens for the selected crypto in presence of the Internet. It\u2019d be like a \u201cdelayed\u201d transaction, using IOUs on intelligente Vertr\u00e4ge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnother proposal for the purpose is \u201cDelegaCoin<\/a>\u201d. With this system, the crypto owner could delegate their coins to other people via trusted execution environments (TEEs). As the team explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cTEEs prevent malicious delegation of the coins (…) the proposed system allows the owner to share their coins without interacting with the blockchain or any trusted third parties. The owner is able to directly delegate specific amounts of coins to others by sending them through a secure channel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
For their part, Taisei Takahashi and Akira Otsuka vorgeschlagen<\/a> a system for offline Bitcoin-Zahlungen<\/a>. On it, the parties would use trusted hardware wallets with pre-loaded and verified coins.<\/strong> So, at the moment of transactions, the users won\u2019t need an immediate connection to the blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCoins via SMS and radio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nPreviously, several developers worldwide designed different systems to send offline crypto transactions via SMS or radio. In 2014, the Finnish Joel Lehtonen created the platform \u201cKryptoradio<\/a>\u201d. This one transmitted Blockchain<\/a> data via radio, which could be picked by a Linux computer connected to a DVB-T receiver. Brands like Blockchain, Coinapult, or CoinText developed their own methods. Samourai Wallet also developed its own proof-of-concept dubbed \u201cPony Direct<\/a>\u201d. With it, the sender would need to enter the phone number \u201cof a known Pony Relay device\u201d and paste a signed transaction hex. The latter would be sent through several SMS \u2014with the standard SMS fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThese systems weren\u2019t as easy as filling some bars and pressing a button. That\u2019s maybe why they didn\u2019t last much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Functional projects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nProposals and old projects so far. Is there something that really works here? Well, yes. But nothing without dedicated hardware. We can start by mentioning the company Blockstream, which has four Bitcoin satellites<\/a> across six coverage zones. As they describe<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cThe Blockstream Satellite network broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain around the world 24\/7 for free, protecting against network interruptions and providing areas without reliable internet connections with the opportunity to use Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
According to their coverage map, almost all of the world is covered by these satellites<\/strong>; except for some distant regions in the Sahara, Madagascar, Greenland, the Middle East, and Western Russland<\/a>. Most of America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania can collect blockchain data through these satellites, completely offline. GoTenna<\/a> developed what\u2019s called a \u201cMesh Network\u201d: a group of physical devices (nodes) that can connect to each other independently. This way, they can share messages or crypto transactions via mobile<\/a>, without the need for Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAlong with these devices (at $200 each), GoTenna created the app TxTenna<\/a> with Blockstream and Samourai Wallet to make offline Bitcoin transactions<\/strong> \u2014between the GoTenna device users. Using this hardware, they promise to \u201cavoid local censorship\u201d, \u201cenhance privacy\u201d, and \u201cimprove security\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBeyond them, the company GK8 developed<\/a> a cold hardware wallet with a unilateral connection to the blockchain. This implies that the users can \u201ccreate, sign, and send blockchain transactions without Internet connection\u201d. It was done especially for security purposes since the coins stored offline<\/a> are safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\nProbably, this will be barely the beginning, anyway. A future of offline crypto transactions is coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nCrypto transactions offline could provide a huge opportunity for financial inclusion<\/a>, especially in difficult areas. More than that, common crypto users wouldn\u2019t need to worry about having a connection at all. It\u2019d be more practical than traditional bank transfers, even. They could send and receive coins (and send some messages too, as we\u2019ll see ahead) without energy or Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the second place, we need to talk about decentralization<\/a> a bit. Cryptocurrencies were designed to be censorship-resistant, since, in theory, no one can control them. That\u2019s just the ideal, though. In reality, cryptocurrencies work on Internet, and, sadly, the Internet isn\u2019t censorship-resistant at all<\/strong>. This way, for example, a government couldn\u2019t block Bitcoin transactions directly, but they could block crypto exchanges or national Internet Service Providers (ISPs \u2014companies that provide connectivity). They can cut off the power too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s why we still need to develop more independent infrastructure to carry on crypto transactions offline; without the need for our usual sources of energy<\/a> and connection. A higher decentralization and security would be reached. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can find some proposals on paper that might be interesting but still require a temporary Internet connection. One of them is \u201cPure Wallet\u201d, a software that uses new tokens for offline exchange. The idea<\/a> is to use an Internet connection briefly to transform cryptocurrencies into tokens that could be handled offline by the parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Once transformed, the parties could send and receive these tokens through Near Field Communication (NFC) between electronic devices. Finally, the receiver can redeem the tokens for the selected crypto in presence of the Internet. It\u2019d be like a \u201cdelayed\u201d transaction, using IOUs on intelligente Vertr\u00e4ge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another proposal for the purpose is \u201cDelegaCoin<\/a>\u201d. With this system, the crypto owner could delegate their coins to other people via trusted execution environments (TEEs). As the team explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTEEs prevent malicious delegation of the coins (…) the proposed system allows the owner to share their coins without interacting with the blockchain or any trusted third parties. The owner is able to directly delegate specific amounts of coins to others by sending them through a secure channel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n For their part, Taisei Takahashi and Akira Otsuka vorgeschlagen<\/a> a system for offline Bitcoin-Zahlungen<\/a>. On it, the parties would use trusted hardware wallets with pre-loaded and verified coins.<\/strong> So, at the moment of transactions, the users won\u2019t need an immediate connection to the blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Previously, several developers worldwide designed different systems to send offline crypto transactions via SMS or radio. In 2014, the Finnish Joel Lehtonen created the platform \u201cKryptoradio<\/a>\u201d. This one transmitted Blockchain<\/a> data via radio, which could be picked by a Linux computer connected to a DVB-T receiver. Some energy was required, but no Internet connection was necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few years ago<\/a>, sending crypto through SMS was somehow popular too<\/strong>. Brands like Blockchain, Coinapult, or CoinText developed their own methods. Samourai Wallet also developed its own proof-of-concept dubbed \u201cPony Direct<\/a>\u201d. With it, the sender would need to enter the phone number \u201cof a known Pony Relay device\u201d and paste a signed transaction hex. The latter would be sent through several SMS \u2014with the standard SMS fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These systems weren\u2019t as easy as filling some bars and pressing a button. That\u2019s maybe why they didn\u2019t last much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Proposals and old projects so far. Is there something that really works here? Well, yes. But nothing without dedicated hardware. We can start by mentioning the company Blockstream, which has four Bitcoin satellites<\/a> across six coverage zones. As they describe<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Blockstream Satellite network broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain around the world 24\/7 for free, protecting against network interruptions and providing areas without reliable internet connections with the opportunity to use Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n According to their coverage map, almost all of the world is covered by these satellites<\/strong>; except for some distant regions in the Sahara, Madagascar, Greenland, the Middle East, and Western Russland<\/a>. Most of America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania can collect blockchain data through these satellites, completely offline. That\u2019s it if the user acquires and set up a small antenna and a USB receiver (at $500 each).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another functional project for offline crypto transactions comes in partnership with Blockstream, indeed. GoTenna<\/a> developed what\u2019s called a \u201cMesh Network\u201d: a group of physical devices (nodes) that can connect to each other independently. This way, they can share messages or crypto transactions via mobile<\/a>, without the need for Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Along with these devices (at $200 each), GoTenna created the app TxTenna<\/a> with Blockstream and Samourai Wallet to make offline Bitcoin transactions<\/strong> \u2014between the GoTenna device users. Using this hardware, they promise to \u201cavoid local censorship\u201d, \u201cenhance privacy\u201d, and \u201cimprove security\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond them, the company GK8 developed<\/a> a cold hardware wallet with a unilateral connection to the blockchain. This implies that the users can \u201ccreate, sign, and send blockchain transactions without Internet connection\u201d. It was done especially for security purposes since the coins stored offline<\/a> are safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Probably, this will be barely the beginning, anyway.
