It\u2019s not weird at all that some DeFi platforms get hacked often, but the recent attack on Poly Network is making history for several reasons. In the first place, this <strong>is considered the greatest DeFi hack in history, since over $613 million were stolen in the blink of an eye<\/strong>. Secondly, Poly\u2019s team begged the hacker to return the money, and the hacker actually answered that prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poly Network is a <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/09\/09\/how-to-make-thousands-dollars-defi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DeFi protocol<\/a> that swaps tokens across several blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Binance Smart Chain (BSC). <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425130017546149891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The assets<\/a> involved in this huge attack were ETH, USDC, DAI, UNI, <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2021\/06\/16\/what-happening-shiba-inu-coin-dog-themed-cryptos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHIB<\/a>, FEI, MATIC, and several BSC tokens; all of them from general community members. The hacker transferred different amounts of each token involved to their own wallets until reaching the $613 million peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, it seems like this time isn\u2019t a flash loan attack or a private key leak, as usual. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/slowmist.medium.com\/the-root-cause-of-poly-network-being-hacked-ec2ee1b0c68f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the analysis<\/a> by the security firm SlowMist, the hacker managed to change the keeper role in the attacked <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/12\/09\/what-are-smart-contracts-what-they-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smart contract<\/a>. This way, they could \u201cconstruct a transaction at will and withdraw any amount of funds from the contract\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of this greatest DeFi hack, the <strong>Poly Network team published a statement to \u201curge\u201d the hacker to return the stolen assets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yzw4oDenjC\">pic.twitter.com\/Yzw4oDenjC<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Poly Network (@PolyNetwork2) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425123153009803267?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The publication was received with a lot of criticism and mockery by the community. For one side, there were users sending congratulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/10\/04\/malware-can-steal-cryptos-how-avoid-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the hacker<\/a> and even asking Poly\u2019s team to include them on the payroll. For the other, several community members took the opportunity to make their own requests to the hacker, leaving their wallet addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hey hacker if you\u2019re reading this please send me 2 million dollars worth of coins to my eth address.. It would change my life \ud83e\udd23 0xa4957a22c6bE7285ff8d2D953858595527Ab2316<\/p>&mdash; Ivo \ud83c\udded\ud83c\uddf7 (@ivozetic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ivozetic\/status\/1425149402411323393?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Greatest DeFi hacker returns the funds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Believe it or not, the hacker actually showed mercy. So, they sent back over $260 million as of August 11<\/strong>, if not the total stolen amount. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425509322126024708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The recovered<\/a> assets include $3.3 million in<a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2020\/11\/14\/ethereum-2-new-features-prices-more-ethereum-chains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Ethereum<\/a>, $256 million in BSC tokens, and $1 million in Polygon. The rest would be $269 million in ETH and $84 million in MATIC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the hacker still possesses around $353 million from the attack. It\u2019s not the <a href=\"https:\/\/alfacash.blog\/2021\/07\/08\/top-5-biggest-crypto-hacks-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greatest crypto hack in history<\/a>, but <em>it is<\/em> one of them. With the original amount, the Poly Network hack would even surpass the (in)famous Coincheck attack back in 2018.
